Commercial planning

A commercial wallcovering specification checklist

What designers, facilities teams and project managers should supply for a clear wallcovering scope: finishes, quantities, preparation, access and care.

Key planning point

A clear commercial package identifies the exact walls, products, preparation responsibilities and access sequence. Drawings and finish names alone do not establish that the site is ready to hang.

Define the wall package precisely

Start with current elevations or a marked plan. Use consistent room numbers and finish codes so the person ordering material and the person installing it are working from the same information. Identify full walls, feature panels, returns and concealed areas separately. A rendering communicates intent but may omit the dimensions and edge details required for installation.

Record which drawing revision is approved. If joinery or signage changes, update the wallcovering package rather than expecting the installer to reconcile conflicting documents during the work.

Provide the exact material documentation

Include manufacturer, product reference, color, backing, width, usable bolt length and hanging instructions. Pattern repeat, reverse hanging, seam methods and adhesive requirements can change quantity and installation approach. A general description such as commercial vinyl is not enough to establish all of those details.

Any fire, cleaning, durability or other performance requirement should be tied to the actual specified product or system. Obtain documentation from the supplier and have the responsible design or compliance party review it. Decorative installation does not create a performance certification.

  • Product reference and approved sample
  • Dimensions, repeat and hanging method
  • Specified performance and care documentation

Make preparation responsibility explicit

List who removes existing coverings, cleans residue, repairs walls and applies the compatible primer. Agree how the surface will be reviewed before hanging. A painted wall can still be unsuitable if the coating is loose, uncured or incompatible with the adhesive system.

Inspect under the final lighting where practical. Directional lights can reveal patch edges that were not apparent in diffuse light. Resolve moisture and movement concerns before decorative work; wallpaper is not a repair for either condition.

Control supply and access

Confirm who orders, receives, inspects and stores the wallcovering. Record quantities and batch allocation by room or phase. A late reorder may not match a continuous wall, and damaged or missing material should be reported before it is cut.

For occupied spaces, identify temporary circulation, room closures and the person responsible for furniture and equipment. Coordinate dusty work, electrical changes and joinery with the installation. The proposed sequence should allow the manufacturer’s drying requirements rather than treating them as optional.

Agree handover information

Review the finished work against the agreed scope and product characteristics. Natural panel variation or a deliberate final pattern join should have been discussed earlier, not introduced as an explanation after handover. Keep approved samples and relevant instructions available throughout the project.

Provide the operator with the care guidance and label any retained material. A spare roll helps future maintenance but does not guarantee an invisible repair after aging or light exposure. A well-documented package makes future decisions more informed without promising what the material cannot deliver.

Manufacturer reading and practical caveats

This is general planning guidance, not a substitute for the instructions supplied with your exact product or a review of your walls. The following manufacturer resources support further reading; they do not imply an endorsement of GetPro Wallpaper.
