Room planning
Wallpaper in powder rooms and bathrooms: choose for the location
Separate dry decorative walls from wet zones, check ventilation and care ratings, and plan fixture access before a bathroom wallpaper project.

Key planning point
Bathroom suitability depends on the exact product, wall location, moisture exposure and ventilation. Washable does not mean waterproof, and wallpaper cannot correct dampness.
Describe the room before choosing the finish
A powder room without a shower and a bathroom used for frequent hot showers can place very different demands on a wallcovering. Even within one room, a dry wall above a console differs from a wall repeatedly splashed by a basin. Start by marking the intended wallpaper surfaces and identifying the exposure each one receives.
Check ventilation and investigate any staining, peeling paint or damp patches. Covering a moisture problem may conceal the evidence while the underlying condition continues. The source should be assessed and resolved before decorative preparation is agreed.
Read suitability and cleaning as separate requirements
A product’s cleaning rating tells you how its face can be cared for. It does not automatically approve it for constant wetting or a shower enclosure. Vinyl products also vary in backing, adhesive requirements and intended use. Natural fibers can have much stricter care limitations than a printed washable finish.
Ask the supplier about the actual location, not simply whether the product is bathroom wallpaper. Follow the chosen product’s written guidance. Ordinary wallpaper should not be treated as a substitute for a documented wet-area system.
- Is this wall exposed to direct splashes or persistent humidity?
- What cleaning method does the supplier permit?
- Are any substrate or adhesive restrictions stated?
A small room can be a complex installation
Mirrors, basins, shelves, towel rails and lights create cutting and access details. Decide what will be removed and who is responsible for that work. Electrical or plumbing work belongs with the appropriate responsible trade; it is not silently included in a wallpaper installation.
If a fixture stays in place, discuss whether the wall behind it is finished and how the visible edges will be handled. Photographs of every wall are more helpful than a floor-area estimate. Include the height above doors and the width of narrow returns.
Order from the repeat, not the room size
A bold motif can be attractive in a compact room, but centering and matching may consume full repeats for small pieces. Door openings do not automatically save the amount suggested by their area. Roll width, usable length and match type determine the cutting plan.
Show the main view from the doorway and identify the wall you want to emphasize. In a fully papered room, the last join may require an intentional compromise. Discuss its location before the first strip is hung.
Preparation and use after installation
The walls generally need to be clean, dry, smooth and sound, with the primer and adhesive selected for the product. Fresh coatings need the required curing time. A surface that feels dry is not proof that it meets the wallcovering manufacturer’s conditions.
Keep the room under the specified conditions during drying and follow the care sheet afterward. Do not rush cleaning or expose the new finish to conditions the product excludes. Include the product link, wall photographs and any moisture concern in your inquiry so the scope can be reviewed before a date is agreed.
Manufacturer reading and practical caveats
