Planning a wallpaper mural: measurements, cropping and panel order
A practical mural checklist covering final wall measurements, artwork proofs, trimming allowance, panel inspection and furniture sightlines.

Key planning point
A mural is a coordinated image, not a repeating roll. Confirm the final dimensions and artwork crop, inspect every numbered panel, and follow the supplier’s trimming allowance before installation.
Measure the final wall at several points
Measure width and height at multiple positions rather than assuming the wall is perfectly rectangular. Include the completed trim and any change in ceiling line. The mural supplier’s allowance should cover the expected trimming; adding an arbitrary allowance without checking their ordering method can create the wrong artwork crop.
A mural ordered too small cannot simply be stretched into place. A supplier may offer a revised print or another approved solution, but that is a material decision rather than an installation adjustment. Resolve uncertainty before manufacture.
Approve what the room will actually show
Windows, a headboard, a sofa or reception joinery may obscure the central part of the image. Place those outlines on the artwork proof. A composition that works on a product page may lose its focal point behind the actual furniture.
Check where faces, text or other recognizable elements sit near openings and corners. If the mural continues onto an adjoining wall, ask the supplier to confirm panel dimensions and the intended wrap. Do not assume a flat image can be divided anywhere without changing its effect.
- Are the proof and final wall dimensions consistent?
- Will furniture hide the important part of the artwork?
- Does the supplier approve the planned corner or opening detail?
Inspect the complete panel set
Keep the panels uncut and in their supplied sequence until the set has been checked. Look for missing panels, print defects and unexpected color differences. Retain the labels, packaging and approved proof so a supplier question can be traced accurately.
A repeating wallpaper offcut usually cannot replace a missing mural section. The correct image panel is required. Report defects before hanging rather than trying to solve them with an improvised cut that may make a return or replacement harder.
Match the method to the product
Murals can use different substrates and adhesive systems. Some are paste-the-wall; others require a different method or are pressure-sensitive. Read the exact instructions for panel sequence, overlap or trimming, preparation and drying. A technique used on a previous mural is not automatically appropriate.
The substrate still matters. Uneven patches, loose paint and adhesive residue can affect the finish. Fresh paint must meet the required curing guidance, particularly where the mural uses pressure-sensitive adhesive.
What belongs in an installation inquiry
Send the product specification, approved crop, panel dimensions, wall measurements and photographs showing the whole room. Identify fixtures that stay, items that can be removed and any high or difficult access. If the order has not been placed, say so; that is the right time to review the layout.
Agree the scope for preparation and fixture handling before work begins. Keep care instructions afterward and ask the supplier how replacements are managed. A mural can be a compelling feature, but an exact future panel match should not be promised without the supplier’s confirmation.
