Planning guide

Pattern repeats and how much wallpaper to order

Wall area alone will under-order. Here is the method, with a worked example.

Terms

  • Repeat: the vertical distance before the pattern starts again.
  • Straight match: the pattern lines up horizontally across each seam.
  • Half-drop: each strip is offset by half a repeat, which can add waste.
  • Drop: one full-height strip, cut to match.
  • Double roll: a packaging term. It means two single-roll quantities in one continuous bolt. It does not tell you how many usable drops you get.

Worked example

Hypothetical figures. Your product’s label will differ.

Wall12 ft wide (144 in) x 9 ft high (108 in)
Paper20.5 in wide, sold as a double roll of 56 ft (672 in)
Repeat24 in, straight match
  1. Cut length. 108 in wall plus about 4 in trim allowance = 112 in. Each drop must start at the same point in the pattern, so round up to a whole number of repeats: 5 x 24 in = 120 in per drop.
  2. Drops per double roll. 672 / 120 = 5.6. You cannot use 0.6 of a drop as a full strip, so 5 usable drops. The remaining 72 in may be useful above a door, but do not count on it.
  3. Drops needed. 144 / 20.5 = 7.02, round up to 8 drops.
  4. Rolls. 8 / 5 = 1.6, so 2 double rolls as a bare minimum.
  5. Allowance. Add at least one more from the same batch for mistakes, damage and future repairs: order 3.
Notice that naive area math (144 x 108 in = 108 sq ft, divided by a double roll’s ~95 sq ft) suggests just over one roll. Repeat and drop length make the real answer two, plus allowance.

Things that change the answer

  • Half-drop matches can mean extra waste per drop.
  • Large repeats on tall walls waste more per drop.
  • Windows and doors reduce wall area, but rarely reduce drops one-for-one.
  • Mixing batches risks visible colour shifts.
Caveat. Manufacturer calculators and labels take priority. Ask your installer to confirm quantities before ordering.

Compare the estimate with York Wallcoverings’ wallpaper calculator. It is a planning aid; the product’s roll dimensions, repeat and manufacturer instructions determine the order.
